HALYARD MISSION Foundation

The goal of the Halyard Mission Foundation is to educate, commemorate and increase awareness of the Halyard Mission, the rescue of over 500 US airmen during WWII, and the role the Serbs played in the success of the mission.

Projects

The U.S. Army Airborne and Special Operations Museum in Fayetteville NC hosted the Halyard Mission Foundation for a special event.

Serbian Ambassador to the United States, Marko Djuric, attended.

5-6 November: Phoenix. Conducted four presentations during the two-day event to a mixed group of attendees. These events are an important way to reach members both within the American-Serbian community and those from outside.

15 November: Fayetteville, NC. Serbian Ambassador, Marko Djuric was the special guest and heard the announcement that a permanent Halyard exhibit will be established at the museum. This establishes an important long-term relationship between the Museum and the Foundation.

8-13 November. Busy week in California. Discussing future plans with the Midway Museum and San Diego Air and Space Museum. Also visits and presentations at St. George in San Diego and St. Sava in San Gabriel.

30 November: Mesa, Arizona. This is the third such activity at the museum. This special relationship allows for the family of rescued airmen and friends of the Foundation to fly on a piece of history... a C-47 that assisted in the Halyard Mission.

17-20 November: New Orleans. Over four hundred attendees were on hand to participate in numerous discussions on WWII history. This was an important opportunity to build our network and plan for future presentations at the museum.

PROJECTS

Anchor 1

 

Development of permanent memorial site

Annual ceremonies dedicated to commemorating the Halyard rescue mission

 

Signs marking historically significant locations related to the Halyard mission

 

Provide funds for further education of students 

 

Identify and recognize families that assisted with the rescue of American and allied airmen

 

Produce documentaries, animations, and other films dedicated to telling the story of Operation Halyard

 

Conduct research to further the understanding of Operation Halyard.
Finding families of rescued airmen

Work in partnership with communities where the rescue mission took place 

OUR VISION

The goal of the Halyard Mission Foundation is to educate, commemorate and increase awareness of the Halyard Mission, the rescue of over 500 US airmen during WWII, and the role the Serbs played in the success of the mission. By doing this we hope to promote historical ties between the US and Serbia which are based on values of freedom and democracy. We share an important history, and that is an important story to tell.

JOHN CAPPELLO
PRESIDENT

Lt. Col. John Cappello retired from the United States Air Force (USAF) in 2014 after serving over 24 years.  He served as the USAF Attaché to Serbia and Israel. He is a Command Pilot having accumulated over 3,000 flying hours.

Amateur historian, author of several articles on WWII, published in scientific journals. Researched through archival data, and created database with names of more than 5500 airmen that were shot down over Yugoslavia.
