HALYARD MISSION Foundation

The goal of the Halyard Mission Foundation is to educate, commemorate and increase awareness of the Halyard Mission, the rescue of over 500 US airmen during WWII, and the role the Serbs played in the success of the mission.

16 June: Forgotten History exhibit and reception at the Serbian Embassy in Washington DC.

2-4 June: The 32nd Annual WWII Weekend held at the MAAM in Reading, PA brought WWII enthusiasts from across the country.

16-18 May: Opportunity to plan with the Ohio National Guard for the Cleveland Air Show in September. The Foundation looks forward to making this an annual event.

29 May: Honored to spend Memorial Day 2023 at the World War II Memorial remembering and honoring our nation’s heroes.

May 7th: Mesa, Arizona. The Halyard Mission Foundation continues its excellent partnership with the Museum building upon the success of past events.

11 May: The Halyard Mission Foundation was honored to attend the Admiral Halsey Award Dinner aboard Battleship New Jersey Museum in Camden, New Jersey.

The Halyard Mission Foundation works with sculptors, Stan Watts and Andrey Sledkov, of Atlas Bronze Casting, to produce a statue honoring the Halyard rescue mission.

Development of permanent memorial site

Annual ceremonies dedicated to commemorating the Halyard rescue mission

 

Signs marking historically significant locations related to the Halyard mission

 

Provide funds for further education of students 

 

Identify and recognize families that assisted with the rescue of American and allied airmen

 

Produce documentaries, animations, and other films dedicated to telling the story of Operation Halyard

 

Conduct research to further the understanding of Operation Halyard.
Finding families of rescued airmen

Work in partnership with communities where the rescue mission took place 

OUR VISION

The goal of the Halyard Mission Foundation is to educate, commemorate and increase awareness of the Halyard Mission, the rescue of over 500 US airmen during WWII, and the role the Serbs played in the success of the mission. By doing this we hope to promote historical ties between the US and Serbia which are based on values of freedom and democracy. We share an important history, and that is an important story to tell.

PRESIDENT

Lt. Col. John Cappello retired from the United States Air Force (USAF) in 2014 after serving over 24 years.  He served as the USAF Attaché to Serbia and Israel. He is a Command Pilot having accumulated over 3,000 flying hours.

Worked as a journalist and editor at BK TV, British Institute for War & Peace Reporting,  The Economist, Euro-Atlantic Review, Balkan Intelligence, producer at EAI Productions and consultant at Cook Communications and Channel 4.

FOUNDER

Worked as author of Arsenal documentary series, executive producer at EAI Productions projects in Slovenia, Norway, Serbia, USA, Lebanon, Cyprus, United Kingdom, Bulgaria, Hungary, Montenegro and Czech Republic.

MILOS BOJANIC
RESEARCHER

Amateur historian, author of several articles on WWII, published in scientific journals. Researched through archival data, and created database with names of more than 5500 airmen that were shot down over Yugoslavia.
